The Tone, Voice And Expression
of Good Governance.
โPetit a petit, l'oiseau fait son nid.โ - French proverb
Introduction:
Having spent over three decades in leadership roles across various industries, and in the private and public sectors, I've witnessed firsthand the incredible impact that good and bad governance can have on organizations, their stakeholders, and society as a whole. And it drove home to me the importance of being able to master the challenges that come with steering the ship from the boardroom. It takes more than just experience; it requires a deep understanding of governance principles, a passion for doing the right thing, and a commitment to continuous learning.
The idea of building a community of professionals dedicated to elevating boardroom excellence resonates deeply with me. I believe that by equipping ourselves with the right knowledge, insights, and stories, we can empower each other to show up in the boardroom with unwavering confidence and conviction, ready to tackle any challenge that comes our way. Together, we can become the driving force behind good governance and make a lasting positive impact in the organizations we serve. That's my hope.
โLittle by little, the bird makes its nest.โ
With that said, let's dive into 7 key considerations that will shape your transformation experience as you journey towards mastering the art of board leadership! ๐๐พ
Imagine a world where every organization, big or small, operates with unwavering integrity, always considering the greater good. This is the power of good governance. As board members, we hold the key to shaping the future of our organizations and, in turn, affecting the lives of countless individuals. Embracing this responsibility is not just a duty, it's an incredible opportunity to drive positive change that impact lives and livelihoods.
Throughout my career, I've come to recognize that sound governance practices can create an environment where innovation thrives, ethical dilemmas are navigated with grace, and long-term sustainability becomes a reality. The decisions we make in the boardroom are pivotal in charting the course of our organizations. It's a humbling and inspiring role with profound responsibility too. And I believe that by embracing the principles of good governance, we can elevate the impact we make as leaders which can lead to greater personal and professional fulfillment.
When I reflect on my journey as a leader, one constant stands outโthe need for continuous learning and upskilling. The landscape of corporate governance is ever-evolving, shaped by dynamic market forces, technological advancements, and changing societal expectations. The best of board members that I have observed are those that are agile learners, always seeking to expand their knowledge and stay ahead of the curve.
By committing ourselves to upskilling, we can navigate the complexities of the modern business world with confidence. Whether it's understanding emerging governance trends, honing our strategic acumen, or staying abreast of regulatory changes, every effort we make to upskill empowers us to make informed decisions that benefit our organizations and stakeholders.
It's natural to sometimes feel the weight of responsibility as a board member. The decisions we make can have significant consequences, and self-doubt may creep in. However, I've learned that by cultivating confidence and conviction, we can overcome these moments of uncertainty and lead with authority.
Confidence doesn't mean we have all the answers, but rather, it's about being assured in our ability to navigate challenges and make well-informed decisions. When we embody confidence, we create an atmosphere in the boardroom where everyone feels empowered to share their perspectives openly. Embracing diverse viewpoints leads to robust discussions, resulting in well-rounded decisions that benefit the organization as a whole.
Ethical challenges are inevitable in the boardroom. They test our values and integrity, requiring us to make tough choices in the face of conflicting interests. But it's during these critical moments that the true essence of your governance culture shines through.
I've faced my share of ethical dilemmas throughout my career, and they have undoubtedly been some of the most defining moments. By sharing real-life stories and case studies, we can explore the nuances of these challenges and learn from each other's experiences. Then together, we can develop frameworks that gives us context for ethical decision-making, by ensuring that we always uphold the highest standards of integrity and trust.
As leaders, fostering a culture of accountability is one of our primary responsibilities. It starts with holding ourselves accountable for the decisions we make and the actions we take. But it doesn't end there; we must also encourage accountability amongst our director colleagues and throughout the entire organization.
When we lead by example and emphasize transparent and ethical conduct, we create an environment where everyone feels responsible for the organization's success. Accountability is the cornerstone of good governance, and it sets the tone for a thriving and sustainable organization.
There are probably many up and comers in your network who are aspiring to serve on boards. It's been a while since I have been there. But I can still relate to the excitement and eagerness they feel. And I suppose you do too. The journey towards board leadership is filled with opportunities for growth and learning. It begins with nurturing your expertise, networking with industry leaders, and actively seeking opportunities. And when they eventually arrive at your table, you can do a world of good by stepping up to mentor. In the process I can guarantee that you will find yourself being mentored too.

Maybe no-one is challenging you to get better, but you know within yourself that you are not performing at the standard that makes you feel that you're adding the value that you could and should. And deep inside you're fueled by the desire to make a difference. I've been where you are โ aspiring to be a boardroom influencer. I did the hard work, the heavy lifting to figure it all out.
